Moving db from shared to local drive on cluster

Moving db from shared to local drive on cluster

Sorry if this question was answered recently but...

A related question that you may be able to help with. We
have a 2 node cluster running sql enterprise with the data
on a shared disk array - we want to temporarily move the
database off the disk array and on to one of the local
nodes as we need to do some maintenance on the array. When
we tried to backup from the shared drive (s) and restore
to one of the localdrives (d) on node 1 we get an error
message as the drive d on node 1 is not clustered....

Is there a suggested way to tackle this so that downtime
can be mininised... thanks in advance.

Colm,

This just cannot be done. SQL knows it is a cluster, so it forces you to use
dependent cluster resources. If you don't then in a failover situation the
virtual server will just break. I think it is a reasonable restriction. Some
related information confirming this-

Drive on Which SQL Server 2000 was not Originally Installed

Your best solution is to rob another and install this. Transfer DBs over,
perhaps using log shipping to keep them synched until the final change over.
Recover your databases and change you application connection string(s) to
make the switch. Obviously I know nothing of your application architecture
so it may be slightly more difficult that my glib sentence implies, but you
get the idea.
