SQL Server V6.5 for Win NT
Greetings,

SQL Server V6.5 is out for Windows NT and claims to be the ultimate
server for Windows NT. I'd like to hear some
real claims to evaluate if I should give up Oracle and Sybase to use
SQL Server.

Why dont you take a look at it then. You can download a free 120-day trial
version (complete version but works for 120 days only) from
www.microsoft.com.

When are they coming out with SQL Server 6.5 Workstation?

I certainly hope that they give us distributed queries soon....
Maybe 7.0.

Thanks,
Shan

Just a sidenote for all those that want to download the
evaluation version but only have NT Workstation available. MS
says you must have NT Server, but I have had success using SQL
Server on NT WS by editing the registry as the following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptio
ns\

ProductType: REG_SZ: Winnt

Change to:

REG_SZ: ServerNt

This also works for Internet Information Server..

Is there an upgrade path  to Sql 6.5 from 6.0 and how do you go about
getting it.

Robert:

We are working on an upgrade from 6.0 to 6.5.  I'm unaware of any "official" path, other than the
reccommendations in the 6.5 Books Online under the topic "What's New for Setup".  Althought we haven't done
the 6.0 to 6.5 jump yet, my experience (with 4.21a to 6.0) is that Microsoft leaves you pretty much on your own
to define a migration plan, discover any pitfalls, test the migrated system etc.  This is a time when it's
awfully handy to have a development machine where you can upgrade to 6.5 and really hammer on it.

Steps in our plan include:

DBA Education
  Reading the "What's New".
  Load 6.5 onto a non-critical machine & play.
  Prepare class for staff.
Staff Education via DBA.
Upgrade development server to 6.5 over weekend.
Test over weekend.
Developers make any required changes to code.
Developers' test following week(s).
Migrate to production along with the normal release schedule.

As a side issue, the "What's New" section in 6.5 Books Online is quite detailed.  Should be required reading
for any DBA who wants to upgrade.
