migrating 6.5 databases to 2000 via Upgrade wiz

migrating 6.5 databases to 2000 via Upgrade wiz
I need to migrate several databases off an NT server running SqlServer 6.5
to a Win2000 server running SqlServer 2000.  The docs say the Upgrade wizard
shuts down SqlServer 6.5 while it's copying the data to Sql2000.  What I'm
not clear on is:

1. Can the original 6.5 database continue to be used after the Upgrade
wizard is finished?
2. Is there a recommended procedure or best practice for migrating multiple
databases from 6.5 -> 2K?

After the upgrade, you will not be able to 'switch' back between 2K and
6.5.  This is different that what happens when you upgrade to 7.0, which
allows for a 'switch.  As to recommendations, there are a number.

1.  Upgrade 6.5 to the latest service packs
2.  Make sure you have enough free space for tempdb and master to grow
3.  Make backups of everything before the upgrade
4.  Run dbcc's on all important databases.

migrating 6.5 databases to 2000 via Upgrade wiz
Eric,

Let me make a clarification: Sql 6.5 and Sql 2000 are on different servers.
I want to test the upgraded DB before making it live in our production
environment.  So what I want to do is, run the upgrade wizard, then bring
the 6.5 database back up for users, while testing the 2000 version.  Once it
passes all tests, I'll perform a final data migration (to catch changes made
during the test phase) and then shut down the 6.5 database and make the 2000
database live.

I want to make sure that the upgrade wizard does not leave the 6.5 database
in a state in which it can't be brought back up after the upgrade.

Will this plan work?

Thanks for pointing out DBCC, I was unaware of that utility.
-Frank
