SQL Server Upgrade Wizard 6.5 to 7.0

Erik, make sure the account you logon to NT server with is the same account
on both servers. If you use the Admin account on server1 and the admin
account on server2 then you will get the same error message you are getting
now. Use the domain admin account to logon to both servers. This should
solve the problem.

SQL Server Upgrade Wizard 6.5 to 7.0

Hi,

I've already posted this message before, but I'm still having problems to
run the upgrade wizard from a SQL 6.5 machine to another SQL 7.0 machine.
This is a 2-machine upgrade. When I execute the SQL upgrade wizard, I get
the message "Unable to connect to the Export server. Please verify that you
are an NT administrator on that machine".
But all my SQL 6.5 services are started with the 'sa' account, which is also
defined in the Windows NT domain as an administrator. The new SQL 7.0
machine is in the same domain and also these services are started with the
'sa' account.

Can anybody advice please. Please send an e-mail message to

Thanks in advance,

SQL Server Upgrade Wizard 6.5 to 7.0
Gary, thanks for your help but it's still not working.
I'm logged in on the 2 NT servers with my account which belongs to the
'Administrators' and the 'Domain Admins' groups. Also the MSSQLService and
SQLExecutive services are started with this account.
Still, when doing the SQL Server Upgrade Wizard I get the message 'Unable to
Connect to the Export server...'

Any more tips?

Thanks in advance,

Erik Meel

SQL Server Upgrade Wizard 6.5 to 7.0
Erik, lets start from the begining with some questions.
1. What version of NT is running on Server 1 and Server 2? (enterprise or
standard for example) The should be the same. SQL Enterprise will not
install on the Standard version of NT.

2.) Make the you are running the same service paks on both servers.

3. You indicated the account you are using belongs to the Domain Admin
group. Make sure this group has all the necessary access rights.

4.) In the control panel under services, what account is the SQL server and
SQL Agent logining in as. (Should be the domain Admin group on both servers
for the upgrade. You can change it after the upgrade.)

The core problem is the account on server 1 is not the same as the account
on server 2. If they seem the same you need to validate that the account has
full access to both servers.

I hope this is of some help.

SQL Server Upgrade Wizard 6.5 to 7.0
Gary,

The problem is solved. I've just re-installed the SQL 7 server and tested
the upgrade wizard again.
Now it's working fine, and I think I must have made a security fault. It's
not clear to me what was wrong but it can indeed be something with the
accounts.

Thanks for your assistence,

Erik Meel
