Upgrade Wizard can't find SQL Server

I just installed SQL 7 Desktop Edition and Standard Client Side Components
on my NT 4.0 Workstation which already had SQL 6.5. My problem is when I try
to run the upgrade program I get two errors when it comes to filling out the
transer of data from my old SQL 6.5 to my new SQL 7. I don't really have
anything in there I need to transfer, but I do want the UI to look like it
is SQL 7 instead of SQL 6, with usergroups for SQL7 instead of my old server
name with (SQL server 6.5 written behind it in parentheses). Anyway, I get
the following error from the SQL Server  Upgrade Wizard Dialog box: "A Error
occurred on [mycomputername]. Specified SQL Server not found.
ConnectionOpen(CreateFile()).
Then a few moments later, I get another message: "An error occurred while

value is not NULL.
I've tried using all the different password configurations I've got set up,
but nothing works. Any ideas is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Upgrade Wizard can't find SQL Server

on your SQL 6.5 server.

sp_addserver <computername>,local

if <computername> has a dash or some other symbol, you can use anything
else.

stop and restart the 6.5 server and now the upgrade wizard should continue.

I don't understand why you want to run the upgrade wizard if you don't have
anything to transfer.
