Backup device vs. backup to disk

Backup device vs. backup to disk

Are there any pro/cons to either backing up to a disk device or backing up
directly to a file? Historically (SQL 6.5) I've backed up to devices,
however, with SQL2K I can backup to a file. What's the practical difference?
It seems like backing up to a device simply requires more steps but doesn't
offer anything I can't get from backing up to a file. The BOL explain the
difference but doesn't mention any pros/cons to either method. Am I missing
something?

Backup device vs. backup to disk

Zachary, I actually use backup to files. It seems to me that using backup
device is more convenient since it provides a logical name. By using backup
file, one has to be accurately defining physical path. As to the cons, can
you use backup device in Database Maintenance Plan? No. You'll have to use
directory. What if the backup device fails? You have to use sp_dropdevice
and sp_addumpdevice to reestablish the file-device relationship, right?

In fact, since I use stored proc to do backup and restore, which one to use
does matter too much.

Richard
