Unable to logon to SQL server

   Our Environment is as follows:
NT server version 3.51 with service pack 5 running on a dual pentium IBM server with
Raid 5 disk architecture.
SQL server 6.0 with service pack 3 applied.

Every week our site runs a batch file which re-boots the SQL server.  This morning the
server did not start.  A number of attempts to manually start the SQL server were
made.  When the NT server itself was re-booted, SQL server ran normally.  On the event
veiwer the following message appeared for each attempt to start the SQL server " Mesg
17113: initconfig: error (null) opening "master.dat" for config information "

It seems as if the master database could not be re-built as the file "master.dat" could
be opened ?

Any help with this issue would be much appreciated.  Thanks for your time and effort
