 Locked Stored Procedure

I have been in a situation where I can't modify a stored procedure because
it is "in use".    It seems as if the stored procedure is somehow "stuck"
in this situation - dbcc memusage indicates multiple plans and one tree -
but there are fewer users (and application instances) than the number of
plans.  What flag gets set in what system  table (sysobjects?,
sysprocedures?) that indicates the stored procedure is in use? Thanks for
any and all responses!
