Newbie: Problem with multiple connections to same data object (ADO / SQL Server 7)

Hi all
I'm using ADO (VB6) to connect to SQL Server 7.
Working with disconnected recordsets which are then written back to the base
table.
I select a batch of records, update a status field in the base table,
process this batch and then update the base table. This works fine with one
client but as soon as I try to run the same process from a second client the
application fails.
I am using a client side cursor with adOpenStatic, adLockBatchOptimistic.
I want to work in batches rather than single records. If I specify row level
locking for the batch then I must maintain an open connection.
Is there any way around this problem without having to either work with
single records or maintain open connections
I had thought of using a stored procedure to select a batch and update the
status, commiting this as a single transaction to allow server-side locking.
Would this work?
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Ronan
