2nd Request -- Need help w/Strange Combo box behavior

I have a large Access 2k ADP that has been working very well connected to a
SQL 2000 Server.  Added a new application based on SQL (Goldmine) and am in
the process of integrating.  When I base a Combo box on data in the Goldmine
database something strange is happening.  On certain choices in the list (it
consistant on which items) after any code is run based on the change, the
combo box clears.  I have not been able to determine any difference between
the items that clear and those that don't.  This only happens when I base
the rowsource on the different database.

ANY suggestions would be apreciated.  This is going to cause some major
problems soon if I don't get it figured out.

Thanks in advance,

J. Clay

Can you post sample code and a more detailed description of what is
happening?  Does the problem happen after running code in an onChange or
afterUpdate routine of the combo box?

Are you returning too many items for the combobox to handle?

Are you returning any records at all?

Is the code itself changing the combobox?

Perhaps

2nd Request -- Need help w/Strange Combo box behavior
Here is the code related to the combo box:

----------------------------------------------------
Private Sub cmbCustomer_AfterUpdate()
    Dim rst As ADODB.Recordset
    Dim strSql As String
    Dim strCustomer As String

    strCustomer = Me.cmbCustomer
strSql = "SELECT COMPANY FROM Goldmine_Sales_and_Marketing.dbo.CONTACT1
WHERE ACCOUNTNO = '" & strCustomer & "'"
    Set rst = New ADODB.Recordset
    rst.Open strSql, CurrentProject.Connection, adOpenForwardOnly,
adLockReadOnly
    Me.txtCustomerName = rst(0)
    rst.Close
    Set rst = Nothing
End Sub
---------------------------------------------------

If I step through the code, the value stays in the combo box until I step
out on End Sub.  It then dissappears.  The underlying data is still there,
but the combo box itself will not show anything.  Also, normally when you
have an item chosen, when you drop open the box it starts at that item.
With these problem items, they are not recognized and when it is dropped
open you have to start at the beginning.

Additional Info:

Row Source = SELECT ACCOUNTNO, KEY1, COMPANY FROM
Goldmine_Sales_and_Marketing.dbo.CONTACT1 WHERE  KEY3 = 'Customer' ORDER BY
KEY1

I have it set up for 3 columns with the first column as the underlying data
and a width of 0.
The only other code for this form is a button to run a stored procedure and
print a report based on the 3 input fields.

Also,  this is happenning on Bound and Unbound combo boxes.

Hopefully someone can tell me if I am missing something.

Thanks again,
J. Clay

This row source at this time is returning 1343 rows.  There are 3 more combo
boxes with this problem.  Of the three, two have basically the same
rowsource as this and a third has a similar but more limited rowsource that
changes based on the customer.  This ComboBox can have from 0 to 50 rows.

Hey J:

Just a few thoughts....

1.  Were the combo boxes created by right clicking text fields and changing
them to combo boxes?  I've had trouble in the past when using these
transformed fields.

2. What if you wrap your SQL rowsource in a stored procedure and base the
rowsource on that?

3. Have you tried copying the tables to the current database to see if the
problem is with using the second database?

4. What happens if you place an "Exit Sub" at the beginning of your
cmbCustomer_AfterUpdate routine?  Do the values still disappear?

5. Does rst(0) contain data?  You might want to check BOF or EOF before
assigning to the text box....

Good luck....let us know how it goes.

Good try, but still not working.  Responses below....

Any other suggestions?  It is really starting to be a major problem!

Thanks again,

Fresh form with only four fields (This particular one is unbound but the
same records are causing the problem on other forms)

No Help...

Still has problems.  There is something wierd about the record, but what it
could be I don't know.  The actual data is a 20 character code that created
and used by Goldmine
Example of one that doesn't work:   A2072374268(IE1*TLIN
Example of one that does work:    A2072374260),?.VTDON

Got rid of all the code and it doesn't help.  It appears to be something
within the combo box or form itself.  Like I said before though...it is
consistant on which records it happens to and happens on more than one form

Always has data...No affect.

2nd Request -- Need help w/Strange Combo box behavior
Additional Info

I just played with a Clean form with ONLY a Combo box.  Found a couple of
interesting things.

There is still the problem, but I may be narrowing in on something (don't
know what yet!)

Once I make a selection if I go into the Immediate window and get the
following:
--------------------------------------------
?Forms("TestForm").Combo0
A2072374335$O*(YTDo

?Forms("TestForm").Combo0.Column(0)
Null

?Forms("TestForm").Combo0.Column(1)
Null
----------------------------------------------
Notice that the column values have been nulled out.  If I select an option
that I don't have this problem on, the column values are valid.

Any insights on this one???

Once again, thanks in advance for any input.

J. Clay

Hmm...do you think its the asterisk in the field?

I noticed that A2072374260),?.VTDON worked and A2072374268(IE1*TLIN did not
so I would assume that the parenthesis are not affecting it.

The example you gave below was A2072374335$O*(YTDo

The only thing in common is the *?

Can you check if other records with asterisks are working/not working?

I think I may owe you a cold one!  I did try it on some others that had and
Astrisk and it looks like those are having a problem too.

Now that we know which records, how do I get around it?  These codes are
produced by Goldmine and I can't change them.

Any ideas?

2nd Request -- Need help w/Strange Combo box behavior
Just a thought....how about wrapping that funky 20 character id in single or
double quotes in your combo box query?  You can then strip them out before
you use the key in your other queries.  Maybe the quotes will keep
everything in line.

Let me know how it goes...
