Force restore over existing database?

 Force restore over existing database?
I recently made a mistake in my databse and had to restore it. As an
experiment i did NOT check the box for Force restore over existing database
. The restore went fine and my data was back to the way i wanted it.
Everything i could dig up says that if you want your data restored you have
to check that box. i didn't and it worked fine. What am I missing about that
check box. What does it do?

Thanks

 Force restore over existing database?

Force restore is only necessary if the restore is NOT the same as the
original database.  If you are restoring an earlier copy of the same
database, SQL notices that and assumes that is what you meant to do.

In addition to Geoff's comments:

Check out the REPLACE parameter to the RESTORE command in SQL Server Books Online.

 Force restore over existing database?

Tibor, thanks. THAT is what I was looking for. That is the only place
yet to really explain how it works.
