Upgrading Sql Server Desktop engine to Sql Server 2000
When I try to upgrade the Sql Server Desktop engine
the radio button "upgrade" in the Installation selection
Dialog box isn't available. So I installed only the client
tools. In the Win2000 software list(control panel) there
are two entries (Server & Desktop)
What is the impact that I couldn't upgrade the server ?

Now, I have a problem to connect with other SQL Servers
on the network. (while registering new SQL Server I always
receive a timeout)

Our both issues related ?

I don't beleive you can upgrade the desktop edition.... The server edition
runs on win2000 server and enterprise, otherwise you must run the desktop
edition...

If you have the appropriate OS and wish to upgrade.
1. backup all of your databases for safety.
2. detach all user databases, and make a copy (for safety)
3. export all logins etc (maybe using DTC)
4. uninstall desktop
5. install server
6. load logins
7. re-attach all databases

Upgrading Sql Server Desktop engine to Sql Server 2000

Hi,

The OS is Win2000 Server SP2, and
the SQL Server 2000 Desktop Edition (MSDE) was
automatically installed when the sofware Genesys was
deployed.

The software Genesys uses a SQL runtime edition,
but mentions in the manuals that you can upgrade
this database to a SQL 2000 Server. You should use
the option upgrade in the selection box, but this
one is not accessible.

So I installed the client tool (didn't create a new Instance) and
apparently everything is working well.

It there a reason to remove the current configuration
as descripted in your e-mail ? Are the some limitations ?

P.S.
The connection problem is also solved by increasing the
time-out value in the options.

I've heard of cases where you can't upgrade from one edition to another. So this seems to be a
case where your vendor gave you incorrect information. I suggest you check out Wayne's
recommendation.
