 Undocumented Stored Procedures / DBCC

Hello,

I was running SQL Profiler to see what SQL statements Enterprise Manager
executes for some of its tasks and I noticed that it ran a number of
stored procedures and DBCC commands which I was unaware of, and when I
checked BOL, were not documented.

sp_MStablespace

I looked at this stored procedure, and can figure out what it does
There appears to be a whole bunch of sp_MS.... stored procedures, none
of which seem to be documented in BOL, any reason why???

dbcc showtableaffinity

Can anyone tell me what this DBCC statement does?  Again I cannot find
any information about this in BOL.

dbcc showfilestats

This statement appears to simply show stats about the files that make up
a database.  Is there anything special about this option??

Thanks,

Hugh

 Undocumented Stored Procedures / DBCC

As far as the sp_MS* procedures, they are not considered part of the SQL
Server product.

Any vendor who writes tools to work with SQL Server may create stored
procedures to help the tool do its work. The sp_MS* procs are the ones
written to help the MS tools like Enterprise Manager do their work. They are
part of the tools, not the server. They are not documented, because they are
meant to only be used by tools like EM, and are subject to change from
release to release. There is nothing to stop you from using them, if you
think they can help you, but as they are really not part of the product,
they do not need to be documented.

Check out http://www.swynk.com/friends/knight/sp_msforeachdb.asp

and

http://www.swynk.com/friends/knight/sp_msforeachtable.asp

There are others as well, but those two document the SP_MSFOREACH*.* sprocs.
