tempdb performance - SQL 7.0

 tempdb performance - SQL 7.0

If I create my application schema in tempdb and run a timing test, I can
perform the same operation ( a very large batch insert ) to tempdb in about
1/2 the time as the same operation takes to a "real" database.

Tempdb and my other db are the same size and the data and log segments are
split on the same separate physical drives.

Any ideas why inserts to tempdb are so much faster? I would love to have the
performance of tempdb in my other production databases - so would my users.
;-)

Thanks,

Todd S.

 tempdb performance - SQL 7.0

Because tempdb doesn't have to worry about recovery after a crash, it is
just re-created.  So it doesn't have to do much logging.  Now, if you want
all your persistent data to be lost whenever the server goes down (planned
or unplanned) then you could achieve the higher level of performance :-)
