Replication Failure - Time Out Expired

Hi,

We recently upgraded some of our SQL Servers from 7.0 to
2000. About 10 of these Servers are involved in
Transactional Replication (Push). These Servers are a
mixture of 2000 and 7.0 but we have a dedicated
Distributor that is SQL Server 2000 running on Windows
2000 Server. On some days the replication agents have to
retry several times in order to establish a connection
with Publishers or Subscribers. These agents fail at
times, returning the error message that they could not
connect to the Server (Pub. or Dist.). On other days we
have no such problems.

We also have problems from time to time while connecting
to these Servers and those not involved with Replication
using SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Manager or Query Analyzer
with the following error returned
'A connection could not be established to ServerName,
Reason Timeout expired' or [Microsoft] [ODBC SQL driver]
timeout expired when using Query Analyzer. I believe these
two problems are connected.

We have increased the Login Timeout settings in Enterprise
Manager without any success. This problem developed after
we had migrated some of our Servers to SQL Server 2000 and
we do not have it when connecting to SQL Server 7.0 Server
using SQL Server 7.0 Client Tools.

Has anyone had similar problems with there SQL Servers and
if so what may be the cause and Solution of the problem?
Will appling SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1 solve this
problem (Especially to the Distributor)?

Does the MDAC 2.6 RTM component that comes by default with
SQL Server 2000 have any thing to do with this problem. If
so will installing  MDAC 2.6 Service Pack 1 help? Will
rolling back to MDAC 2.5 help.

Thanks.

Osondu.
