Problems backup up SQL Server 7.0 with Backup Exec
i am running Windows NT 4.0 server with SQL 7.0, and trying to backup with
Veritas BackupExec 7.3.  I am experiencing problems with SQL not shutting
down properly and therefore my backup not completing.  Has anybody else
experienced this or know how to fix it?  I think I have the Backup Exec
Agent installed but it may need tweaking!

Problems backup up SQL Server 7.0 with Backup Exec

I don't know Veritas products, but requirement to shutdown server for backup is
strange. Proper database backup must be performed when database is online, and it
can be done even if modifications occur in the database. (thats difference from
Oracle 7.x full backup).

Of course, you can backup database files, as a supplement - then server must be
stopped. But it is not used widely, main reason is that you can't use this backup
as a start point for incremental backups, opposite to proper online backup.
Second reason could be that this method has generally greater space requirements.

Suggestion, upgrade to the latest version of Backup Exec. (8.5, I
think)  It has much better support for SQL Server 7.0.

SQL Server shouldn't be shutting down to do a backup.  Why do you think it
should?

If you are using the Agent, it just talks to SQL and manages the standard
SQL Backup process for you.  None of which requires a restart.

If you are not using the agent and are just trying a file backup, you will
not be able to backup the database files that are in use while SQL Server is
running.

Problems backup up SQL Server 7.0 with Backup Exec
We use Veritas BackupExec to back up our SQL Server databases.
On the weekend we have the SQL Server services scheduled to shut down so
Backup Exec can do offline backups of the data files.

There are known issues with using BackupExec 7.x with SQL Server 7.  I
believe Veritas does not support this.  I recommend upgrading to Backup Exec
8.x and you shouldn't have any problems

Thomas - if you have the SQL Agent installed for Backup Exec then it should
backup SQL via the SQL api's and not by shutting SQL down.
