SQL Server 2000 install fails on queries but not other operations

This is

I am trying to install SQL Server on Windows 2000 Professional SP1.  I am using
Windows Authentication (no domain controller).

The installation only worked partially, possibly due to a problem with ADO:
1.  I can use the enterprise manager to create tables, inspect the structure of
tables, configure security, build stored procedures, etc, but CANNOT query the
database.  When I query a database table, I get the message: "The query cannot be
executed because some files are missing or not registered."
2.  I can successfully create an Access project that references an old database,
but when I do I cannot see any tables or queries in the database (reason:
connection dropped).  When I test the connection during creation, the connection
tests OK.  (BTW, I DID install the Access 2000/SQL Server 2000 Migration patch).
3.  Curiously, I can use the Query Analyzer to successfully evaluate queries on
any table in the database.
4.  SQLdiag does not seem to return any obvious problems.

My thought is that ADO or ODBC is broken because SQL Server does seem to work via
the Query Analyzer.  Unfortunately reinstallation of MDAC doesn't fix the problem.

Does anyone have any insight into this problem?

SQL Server 2000 install fails on queries but not other operations

I am experiencing a problem with the initialization of the Help Center using Windows
ME.  I isolated the problem to my MDAC installation.  I ran the MDAC Component Checker
and found a mixed installation of MDAC 25 and MDAC 2.5 SP1. There are 13 files that
are out of sync and seven registry keys that are missing.

To complicate matters a bit further,  I also have Windows 2000 installed on my C drive
(dual boot).  The MDAC configuration is almost correct for  MDAC 2.5 SP1.  There are
three files that are out of sync.

Now for the $64K question.  How can I re-install MDAC 2.5 SP1?  Is there a switch
setting to override the following error message:

"Microsoft Data Access Components 2.5 is already installed on the version of
     windows that you are running....."

Hopefully, the procedure will be the same for WIndows ME and Windows 2000.

It sounds like some DLL was either replaced /overwritten by an app that was
installed after SQL Server or there is another version of that DLL or the
DLL is missing altogether.

You may try to reinstall MDAC by itself. The installation file would be
MDAC_TYP.EXE which can be extracted from SQLRedis.exe /C /T:path

However, before you do that make sure that you close and stop all the apps
that could be using ODBC, ADO, OLE-DB, etc. Those include SQL Server, IIS
services, Visual Studio, Office, COntrol Panel, any third party development
tools .

If you want to get to the bottom of it and find out which DLL, you can use
TLIST.exe from NT resource kit or HandleEx from www.sysinternals.com to see
what DLLs get loaded at the time of the command you are executing. Then
compare to another SQL Server and see the difference.
