 SQLAgent logfile is HUGE

Hi all,

I've got a recurring problem on one of my SQL servers. The problem is
the absolutely explosive growth of the SQLAgent log file. Twice now we
have run out of disk space on the volume on which the DBs reside as a
result of it. Today it happened again and the file was in excess of
20GB. That's right, gigabytes!

Anyway, I don't have the file handy for perusal as I had to quickly get
the server in working order again so I deleted it.

Q's:
- What would cause this thing to get SO big?
- What processes should I be looking for that would contribute to this
exponential growth?
- Is there anything I can do to eliminate this rapid growth?
- I've thought of scheduling a restart of the SQLAGENT service every
night. Would that help? Would that cause other problems? Doing this
would keep the file size more manageable and I might then be able to
glean more info from it, right?

Thanks for listening,

Do you have a lot of maintenance jobs running regularly?
The log could be filling up with informational messages.
Check also that you haven't enabled the 'Include Execution
Trace Messages' in the Sql Server Agent properties.

The restart would probably help at least in giving you a
manageble file for troubleshooting.
