Using DTS from 120 evaluation copy

I have a number of tables on my system at home that were developed with the
evaluation copy of SQL7. Now I need to put the data on a server at the
hosting company I use. DTS fails with an error message regarding licensing
of the source and destination servers. Am I right if I assume this means I
will need to purchase my own copy of SQL7? Is there any (legal) way around
this?

This happens because the sides of transformation have different type of
licensing. You can try to make a backup of your database, move to the new
server then run the DTS package with databases on the same machine. You can
use two different SQL Servers only if both have the same type of license or
one is Enterprise Edition and the other is Standard Editon (so no Personal
Edition or an edition for evaluation)

I hope it helps,

Marc:

All you need to do is save your LDF & MDF (and NDF files if any) then use
sp_attach_db to a licensed SQL server.

Refer to Books on Line  sp_attach_db or sp_attach_single_file_db.

Hope this solves your problem

I have never tested this with an evaluation edition, but it sounds more
like the licensing mode of the "server" being "per server" and you using
a Personal/Desktop edition.

Thanks Ed, I think I am ready to purchase my own copy anyhow as I want to
keep a local version and use replication. Is there something I need to  know
in regard to licensing (mine and my web host)

Marc:
Since you are purchasing your own copy, there shouldn't be any additional
licensing issues.
When you upgrade your home machine, just detach the data files
(ldf,mdf,ndf), uninstall the
eval edition, install the new copy, then use sp_attach_db to attach the
databases.

Good Luck.
