Question about Transaction log backup with Backup Exec

Mike #1 / 2	Question about Transaction log backup with Backup Exec I having some incremental backup problems with SQL7 and Backup exec Here is my environment: 2k server sp3 Sql 7 sp2 Backup Exec 8.6 6 GB sql db I do a full database backup to tape every night and am trying to do some sort of incremental backup every few hours during the day to a firewire drive I have attached. This has worked well for other backups because it is so darn fast!! I thought backing up the transaction log and truncating the log during the day is the logic choice for an incremental solution. The problem I am having is that the transaction log backup is over 6GB, the same size as the entire DB, rather than the expected 186 meg, the size of the transaction log. Can this be right? What could cause this? Rather than hit the server with a 6 gb backup during work hours, I decided to go and to a differential backup. Surely it would be smaller. Nope. Same 6 gb in size. Any guesses what is going on here? Mike <><

Andrew J. Kell #2 / 2	Question about Transaction log backup with Backup Exec My guess is that you ran some sort of optimization job like DBCC DBREINDEX etc. If so then you could easily affect a lot of pages that will need to be backed up. -- Andrew J.
