ascii export and import using butil

ascii export and import using butil

I have 2 questions about this topic:

1. When i do the ascii export, it seems to export it into some kind of hex dump
file. Is there a way to export the btrieve files to a flat ascii file useing
the butil command line functions.

2. When I do and export to ascii, clone the database to another file, and then
load the ascii file into the new database, the size is considerably smaller. My
hypothosis is that it does not export deleted records that may hold space in
the original file, because all the data in the files matches just fine, however
I need to be sure why this happens, so I am positive about the safety of our
data.

thanks for any help

As far as I know, it writes the data exactly as present in each record.
Binary is binary, etc.

The the space taken over by deleted records is reused when you do adds, but
the file is never "compacted" unless you do a save/restore. Your theory is
correct, you have not lost any data.
