I need to learn about Pick R83. (My client has an old accounting system
that might affect my work)

Anyone recommend a good 'first book'.

There are several book authors on-line here.  Each of their books is
thorough and rewarding in its own style.  It may be that they are
hesitant to blow their own horn (LOL) or that the rest of us don't
want to recommend one over the other.

There are several books available.  Is Spectrum still running the
"bookshop" or whatever it is so this person can get a listing of
what's available?

Spectrum still has its bookshop and has a quite a few books which
talk exclusively about R83 style systems. I don't have their
number but their located in San Diego. Happy reading.

Try "Pick Master Dictionary" and "Pick Access" both from O'reilly and
Assoc. in Sebastapol CA. 800-338-6887. they may be out of print since
O'Reilly seems to have bailed out of pick and focused on unix books, go
figure.But they are by far the best books i have found.Good luck

Tab Books has some good titles: The Pick Perspective (good system overview)
and Programming in PICK BASIC by Jonathan Sisk. If you can't find
them locally and have a Web browser look for Stacey's Books and
Computer Literacy under books in Yahoo.
