                          Call for Papers
The Fifth Pacific Workshop on Distributed Multimedia Systems
                 Tamkang University, Taipei, Taiwan
                          July 23-25, 1998

Theme of Workshop
The last few years have been an explosive growth of multimedia
computing, communication and applications. This revolution is
transforming the way people live, work, and interact with each
other, and is impacting the way businesses, government services,
education, entertainment, and health care are operating. It is
safe to say that the multimedia revolution is underway. Yet,
several issues related to modeling, specification, analysis and
design of distributed multimedia systems and applications are
still challenging to both researchers and practitioners. The
purpose of this workshop is to serve as a forum for the exchange
of ideas among practicing engineers and researchers from around
the world, as well as highlight current activities and important
topics in the field of distributed multimedia systems and technology.
The workshop organizers seek contributions of high quality papers,
panels or tutorials, addressing various aspects of distributed
multimedia systems and applications, for presentation at the
conference and publication in the proceedings. Topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:

o distributed multimedia databases and computing
  o multi-paradigmatic information retrieval
o modeling and analysis of distributed multimedia systems
o OS support for distributed multimedia systems
  o multimedia communications and networking
o multimedia digital libraries and mail systems
  o multimedia human-computer interaction
o multimedia applications for CSCW, distant education
  o electronic commerce, tele-conferencing, tele-medicine.
o visual and multidimensional languages for multimedia applications
  o multimedia workflows
  o multimedia stream synchronization
o virtual reality, virtual environment, and their applications

The use of prototypes and demonstration video for presentations
is encouraged.

Workshop Site
The conference is located at the Tamsui campus of Tamkang University.
Tamsui is a beautiful college town 15 miles from the downtown of Taipei.
The campus is 10 minutes from the seashore of north Taiwan and about 50
