 Help needed

I would like to ask some questions regarding the use of database tables in
spreadsheets. Currently I am using Database Desktop (an add-in of Quattro
Pro Win) to make queries on some large database (.DBF) tables.

The tables look like this:

Name    Product         Date    Sales
A       X               jan     100
A       X               feb     200
A       Y               jan     30
A       Y               feb     50

Using queries I can make summaries of these tables but I wish to use them in
a spreadsheet form which look something like this

Total sales by sales rep and date
        Date
        jan     feb
Name
A       130     250
B

I can do this using the Data Modelling Desktop (another add-in of QPro-Win)
but I find it very unwieldy as I have to copy and paste a lot. In addition,
if I make calculations on the spreadsheet I cannot put the results into a
new database table.

My question is whether there is a program or method which enables me to
treat my data as one big 'lump' and enables me to make queries, categorize
and crosstab them at will, make calculations on them and store them without
having to worry about the format they are in.

I would be very helpful if you can help me, but could you please post any
answers here as I have no direct access to a mail box.

There is a product from Lotus called Approach for Windows, which is either
now shipping a version 3.0 or about to ship it.  This version has built-in
crosstab reports so you can drag 'n drop columns and turn them into summaries
and you can work with the data and summarize every which way.  It appears
that they put in code from Improv, so it really is a spreadsheet that you
are working with.  You can also do a banded report instead if you get sick
of the spreadsheet layout when working with summaries.

I've played around with the beta quite a bit and I think it is exactly
what you want.  It also works with just about any file format under the
sun, so you can probably just read you file in as-is and start working
with it.

I think that they have a competitive upgrade from Quattro Pro for like $129
or something.  It's a great product.

The number is 1-800-277-7622 to get literature or whatever...
