Does anyone have a recommendation for a cash drawer product that works well
with D3 in a networked environment.
The only way I know is use the workstation's parallel port and have it open
the cash drawer with a print command.
Any other ideas?

Contact Total Computing Solutions. They have been doing cash drawers with D3
for several years.

I haven't done this in a while, but here is what I remember.

There are a number of cash drawer manufactures such as Indiana Cash Drawer
and APG. They make cash drawers with a variety of interfaces. Some open the
drawer by applying a DC current to a solenoid. Others open whenever they
"see" a specific character. The latter are a bit more expensive. Which one
you want depends on how you are going to set it up.

To open the drawer when plugged into the serial port of a dumb terminal or
PC, you turn on the port and send the proper character string. I would not
use the parallel port.

You can also run a serial cable to the cash drawer and set it up as a system
printer. Just do an SP-ASSIGN, turn on the printer, send the character
string, turn off the printer.

My favorite set up is a Star SP340FD receipt printer with an APG cash drawer
plugged into the external serial port of the printer. Then you simply embed
the character string into your cash receipt print program. The printer
ignores the character string. When the user prints a receipt, the cash
drawer pops open. You can even open the cash without printing a receipt
using the method I described above.

Hope this helps.

Bob,

Parallel is one option (as a networked printer on the workstation), or
if you require receipt printers we user the Star Sp312 (also the 212)
which have a cash drawer port on the back of them so you can send a
certain charactor to print and the draw will open.

indiana cash drawer makes one that opens when it
sees a particular character string go by on it's way to a printer.
