Printing to Laser Printer from ISQL

hi everyone,

i have this real silly problem. My clients used to print the output of the
queries to a line printer before but now, since the line printer is in
another room, they would like to print small outputs to their laser printer.

They have a couple of laser printers which are all accesible from the SUN
server. (i.e a normal lpr -P lw <filename> prints to the right printer) .
But when any print is fired from ISQL there is no output. the printer blinks
and then just ignores this print request.  the printers are HP-4000, HP-4
and HP-4M plus.

I even tried printing the temp file created by ISQL from the prompt and that
file is printed correctly. I am using INGRES 6.4/07 on SUN OS 5.6.

thanks in advance,

Girish Kamath.

What is ING_PRINT set to in the users environment?
it normally points a shell script which does the actual
lp'ing ot lpr'ing in your case.
Adjust the script to echo out the command used to a
temporary file and see what command is actually being
used. There may be a hard-coded printer in the script.
What is LPDEST set to?

Printing to Laser Printer from ISQL
Thanks a lot Steve. u saved the day!!!

the variable ING_PRINT was not set in our environment.

however we did have to play around with the parameters before it worked
right.

the script i used is given below. i am sure other people may find it useful.

<<<----SCRIPT START FROM THE LINE BELOW--->>>
:
# Script written to Print ISQL output to laser Printer.
# ING_PRINT should point to this script for
# this script to work correctly. GRK/28Feb2000
# If user prints to some other printer then 4 parameters
#are passed to this script. and the third parameter is
#the name of the printer. In my case it is always lw, so
# i have hardcoded it. Else fire the printout to the
# Line printer.

if [ $# -eq 4 ]
   then
        if [ $3 -eq '-Plw' ]
           then
#I moved the file to another file as the original file ($4) when sent to
Laser printer
#wasn't still printing. it was ignoring the file.
           cat $4 > /tmp/lp.$$
           /usr/ucb/lpr -P lw /tmp/lp.$$
        fi
else
   /usr/ucb/lpr $*
fi
<<<----END OF SCRIPT--->>>

thanks once again for the help.
