 recommendations wanted

Hi,

I have a fair amount of experiences dealing with unix (HPUX
and linux) sys-managing and web server administering (with cgi etc)
but little (practically zero) experiences with SQL databases.

Now, I am needing to set up a database system for our research
group. The database will include archival info of publications,
ongoing experiments, component specifications for the experimental
facilities, equipment data,  and so on.

I'd like to administer the database with/without web and gui.
I intend to run it on an intel linux box which is already running
apache 1.3.1.

I recognize there are several SQL databases available such as
mSQL, MySQL, postgreSQL; and at this moment don't feel I have
enough background info to decide which one to choose.
(I could build all three software packages here and ran them
a bit so I know they work).

Any recommendations or pointers to any comparative reviews
available somewhere, so that I can make a (quasi-)intelligent
decision?

TIA,

- Nobu Toge (KEK, Japan)
