Starting INGRES after Reboot - Problem with INGRES/NET

We start INGRES after reboot on our DEC Alpha with OSF/1 2.0 using:

        su ingres -c "/ingresdb/r6/ingres/utility/iistartup -silent \
                /ingresdb/r6" >/dev/console

Sometimes iistartup thinks there are INGRES/Net-Servers running and
hangs with the Question: Do you wish to stop the running INGRES/Net Servers

A 'ps auxww | grep ingres' shows:

root       515  0.0  0.1  664K 128K co  I  + 10:27:10     0:00.01 /sbin/sh /sbin
/rc3.d/S97ingres start
ingres     538  0.0  0.3 1.86M 488K co  I  + 10:27:41     0:00.14 -u -c /ingresd
b/r6/ingres/utility/iistartup -silent /ingresdb/r6 (tcsh)
ingres    1038  0.0  0.2 1.77M 312K co  I  + 10:29:03     0:00.02 sh /ingresdb/r
6/ingres/utility/ask Do you wish to stop the running INGRES/Net Servers
ingres     929  0.0  0.3 2.06M 512K co  I    10:28:33     0:00.10 /ingresdb/r6/i
ngres/bin/iigcn p2
ingres     540  0.0  0.2 1.83M 360K co  I  + 10:27:42     0:00.30 sh /ingresdb/r
6/ingres/utility/iistartup -silent /ingresdb/r6
ingres     937  0.0  0.2 1.80M 360K co  I  + 10:29:00     0:00.16 sh /ingresdb/r
6/ingres/utility/iirungcc

In this case, killing the process ask [here: 1038] helps and INGRES
starts correctly.

But: What can we do to avoid this? We want INGRES to start up automatically,
we don't want to correct this error after every reboot!

Please answer by Mail, I don't always read this newsgroup!

The most likely cause of this is that the name server (iigcn) did not clear
out it's server list on shutdown.

The solution is to set an INGRES environment variable:

% ingsetenv II_GCNxx_SVR_RESET true
(where xx is the value of your installation code II_INSTALLATION)

This will cause the name server to perform a 'cold start' - clearing out the
list of known servers on startup.

Hope this helps..

Good point by John.  However, Don't forget tho' that if you bring your name
server down (to do admin etc) then restart it, your name server regiser will
be empty.  You will have to manually add these or ingunset the variable and
then restart the name server.

Maybe you might want to setenv IIGCNxx_SVR_RESET, so this is only done on
startup.  Otherwise you will appear to have no dbms servers 'up'
