 HP UX 10.20 -> HP UX 11

 Hi Christian <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Last year I found my self in the same position and I was going to do the
same procedure, while binaries are different with the same version of
Ingres. But at the last moment I've got the HP information that our 6 years
HP 9000 server could suffer from Unix crashes with HP-UX 11.  I was told
that it has something to do with Firmware. So I would suggest you to check
if your server is appropriate to run HP-UX 11 before thinking of unpgrade.

Hie all,

has anyone already made a migration from [ HP 10.20 / Ingres II ] to [ HP 11
/ Ingres II ].

We have been told by CA that the correct way to do this is :
*) unload databasaes
*) uninstall Ingres II
*) upgrade HP 10.10 to HP 11
*) reinstall Ingres II
*) re install Ingres II
*) recreate users
*) recreate and reload databases

IMHO, it is a heavy process.

I'd like to hear any other simpler way to achieve this migration.

TIA

Well, you will definitely have to reinstall Ingres, as the binaries are
different (hpb.us5 Ingres flavor instead of hp8.us5).  But, as far as I know,
there are no database data differences.

I suppose you could rename the existing data directories, or at least
the iidbdb data/ckp/dmp/journal directories;  do the reinstall;  toss the
iidbdb that the install creates and reinstate the original iidbdb.
In theory that would magically carry all your existing databases forward.

I have NOT tried this, though!  You had better give it a trial run before
you attempt any stunt like this on a production installation.

We successfully migrated from IngresII on HP 10.20 to IngresII on HP 11.0 by taking a checkpoint on 10.20 and rollforwarding (all database including iidbdb) on HP 11.0.  This is faster and less work than unload/reload and CA  supported us during this process.  Karls method seems even faster.

We migrated over a year ago, so the details are gone.  We tested the process many many times (evaluating the new HP in HP's test lab, and then timing the process inhouse to determine downtime).  We had to remove the cnf files, jnl, dmp, ckp for the databases on the new installation before porting the files from the old installation.

 HP UX 10.20 -> HP UX 11
we recently replaced two K-class boxes (10.20 and OpenIngres 1.2) with
2 L-class boxes ( 11.0 and Ingres.II version 2.0/9808).

It took longer to get all of the correct patches on HPUX 11 than it
did to install Ingres II.  I did however, have to install Ingres patch
6791 which brought the installation up to version 2.0/0001.
