Performance Comparison Between String Indexes and Integer Indexes
Where can I find some information on the performance hit on extensively
using a 40-char string as primary keys (hence foreign keys as well) even if
a solution with an integer as primary keys exists?

Thanks

Performance Comparison Between String Indexes and Integer Indexes

Hi Jim,

There might not be any performance hit. It all depends on how and whether
the database compresses string keys and how the data are distributed.

I saw one product go from horrendous performance indexing strings to
phenomenal performance in just one product revision.

Your best bet is to simulate the situation on your database and actually
measure the times for retrieval and update.
