Ingres NET and STAR

 Ingres NET and STAR
I am aware that Ingres NET is needed for all applications that want to
access a database on a different machine, but I am unclear on when
STAR is needed/desirable.  I get the impression that STAR is a performance
enhancement tool when network traffic is heavy.  Can anyone clear this up
and maybe provide a rule of thimg for when STAR should be used?

STAR is the INGRES component that implements distributed databases, ie
the ability to treat multiple databases on multiple nodes as a single
large virtual databases.  There are some provisos but that explanation
gets to the meat of it.  STAR does not enhance performance per se,
unless there happen to be benefits to moving the database closer to a
user without everyone losing access to it--depending on how the database
is used network traffic (and any delays associated with it) can be reduced.

When to use it is complicated; your INGRES TSR will be able to advise.
