Connecting to Ingres on Solaris box from windows client witho ut using Ingres-net

A technique we've used is to write a RPC server running on our Solaris box
that talks to the ingres installation there.

Instead of the client communicating with ingres (via ODBC + Ingres Net) it
communicates with our custom server instead.  The client only has to send
the data to the server and receive a response rather than sending mulitple
sql statements to an ODBC driver (which eventually get translated to Ingres
Net commands).

This approach centralises our business logic in one place and is at least 5
times faster than using ODBC to perform the same queries that the server
does because there is only one network round trip instead of one per sql
query.  (Each transaction consists of six or seven rapid selects and
updates.)  The server is also able to use the repeated query syntax and
obtain a performance boost there.

This was a big project where performance was critical and so the "expense"
of writing the RPC server was justified by the requirements,  however if
your project isn't that big it may not be worth going to the trouble of
doing this.

Hope this is of some help.
