 Upgrading Unidata 4.0 to 5.1
Would anyone have lived through this upgrade and have any words of wisdom to
offer? I know what Ardent/Informix has to say about the benefits, but would
like to hear of any 'challenges' that were experienced upgrading to 5.1 on a
unix platform.

 Upgrading Unidata 4.0 to 5.1

There isn't much UniData traffic here these days.  Trying subscribing to the
Informix-MV mailing list and posting your question there.

await further instructions (sounds exciting eh! - it isn't)

I have heard of a site which found they needed to rebuild their indexes
after such an upgrade, but other than that not much else.

As usual, Unidata's updatesys tool isn't as clever as it might be about
preserving your udtconfig settings and stuff.  I usually advise my clients
to make a copy of their current UniData directory tree, link the copy to
/usr/ud51, load the new binaries into that bin and run updatesys there.
That way your original install is untouched if you need to roll back, you
don't have to recatalog anything, and you can compare key config files
afterwards before you let all the users back on.

Note that on some boxes like Solaris for instance you can't run 5.1 on the
same OS as you run 4.0 and you'll have to do an OS upgrade which is likely
to be far more disruptive than the Unidata one.

 Upgrading Unidata 4.0 to 5.1
FWIW we have usually gone from 3.3 to 5.1 on NT. The biggest problems come
from the phantom jobs and printers. There was also some grief with the
udtsort.exe - apparently they did some things to optimize it and make it
faster - it was. The problem was that (especially with indexes) it would not
return all items....
