How to Backup Ingres Database on Data General.
I need to get the data out of an ingress database that is sitting on a Gata
General machiene.  I would like to get the data into a PC format like a
comma seperated file.  I know nothing about the OS of the data general but
perhaps there is a way to connect to the DG through a rs232 cable and
download the data to the PC.

Please help!!!

The simplest method is to use copydb or unloaddb with the -c parameter
to set up the copy.out scripts to load into sql ('sql dbname
<copy.out').  You can then ftp the files to your PC platform for
uploading.

Hi,
A word of caution though, make sure that you are the only person
accessing the database, when you copy out the tables.
This is because, if you have a live scenario and people are working,
a transaction could modify multiple tables (A,B,C......). During copy some
of the tables say A, B, C..., affected by a transaction, could have been
copied out while the others have not been copied out. This means that a
transaction fired would update all the relevant tables as a result the
copied out tables would be logically inconsistent.
You could use the -l switch to lock the database exclusively.
