Authentication type 5 fails in PG 7.1 to 7.3 connect

We recently upgraded our development server to PG 7.3. We run MRTG[1]
on a small machine that has 7.1 installed and we've never bothered to
upgrade it. Now the scripts that provide the MRTG data are failing
with

fe_sendauth: authentication type 5 not supported

What needs to change (probably in the database server's pg_hba.conf)
to get these working again? (We're not in a position to upgrade the
MRTG server's PG to 7.3 just yet.)

[1] MRTG is a utility that collects statistics periodically for
display on a web page. In our case, we're using small custom scripts
running Perl/DBI to connect to the database server and count rows in
various tables.
