Need Advice with ADO and MSDE

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if some kind person or two would be able to help me
with some general advise on MSDE.

I have just upgraded my VB5.0 app from DAO (Access 97) to ADO2.6 and
have it running reasonably well against Oracle and SQL*Server.

It previously ran against Access 97 and I would like to get it running
against Access 2000, but I'm concerned with ADO to Jet and am considering
the MSDE option which I understand comes with Access 2000.

As I understand it MSDE is a cutdown version of SQL*Server so this is
attractive as I already have the app running agains SQL*Server.

Now I come to the part where I would really love to be able to talk with
or bounce questions off someone who has already familar with MSDE and VB.

I've never used MSDE so my knowledge is really basic, For example my
questions are like:

Do you use the same provider string as with SQL*Server?

Can SQL*Server and MSDE co-exist on the same machine and how do you set this
up?

Are there any tricks you need to know when writing for MSDE?

How is MSDE installed and run?

How do you setup user accounts etc? same transact SQL calls as with
sql*server?  eg sp_grantdbaccess, sp_addlogin, etc?

etc.

As you can see its early days for me and MSDE.

Is there anyone out there who is willing to help me out with some
advice?

TIA

Brian

Need Advice with ADO and MSDE

Hi, Brian -

Don't know if I can answer all your questions, but I can do a few for you:

First of all, MSDE is a nearly full version of SQL-Server. However, it is
optimized for about 5 users, I believe. Also, it does not come with the
complete tool set including enterprise manager, query analyzer, and the
rest. However, if you have these utilities with the full SQL-Server, you can
use them on MSDE. Because I don't have these utilities, I use an Access 2000
.adp project to set up tables, write and maintain stored procedures, prepare
database diagrams, establish referential integrity, etc.

Yes you can use the same provider string. It is, after all, SQL-Server.

You install MSDE from the Access 2000 CD. I have it running on my Windows 98
machine and the installation process also installs a "service manager"
applet that starts and stops MSDE and makes it look like a service running
on NT.

I will leave the other questions to others who are more knowledgable.
However, I think your biggest consideration will be the number of users you
expect to have access to it. I have never tested the threshholds here, so I
can't tell you where and how big a performance hit you might take with 10,
15, 20, or more users. I suppose it is also a function of how much work you
want to perform on the server and how much is offloaded to the clients.

One other note: if you have the Access 2000 CD, not only is MSDE on that CD
but so are the SQL-Server Books on Line. You may want to load this up on a
separate machine somewhere and do some browsing. On the other hand, if you
have the full SQL-Server product, you may already have this.

Hope that helps some.

Jim

I don't think you can install MSDE and a full SQL Server on the same
computer. After all, is you have a SQL Server available on your computer,
why do need MSDE?

Any application agaist SQL Server should work against MSDE except for more
that 5 concurrent users accessing MSDE.

MSDE _is_ SQL-Server. And I don't believe you can install SQL-Server twice
on the same machine.
