Both jdbc tracing (activated in your source by
java.sql.DriverManager.setLogStream ... ) and odbc tracing
(which is controlled through  control panel / odbc manager) are
very CPU- and I/O intensive.

This may be a stupid question, but are you sure both traces are
OFF when you measure performance ?

I'm glad you found it.

I don't have too much experience with jdbc myself. Up to now the
only documentation I used is the Sun JDK 1.1.6 docs, which
covers jdbc basics quite well. It can be obtained from the Sun
website as a separate downloads, somewhere at

After installation ..../docs/guide/jdbc/index.html leads you to
the JDBC guide and the JDBC API Reference.

I'm sorry I don't have more pointers at this time.
Also this newsgroup is a good source for ideas.
