Obtaining Hard Disk Serial Number

 Obtaining Hard Disk Serial Number

I would like to obtain the code to get the hard disk serial number of a
computer so that I can compare the obtained serial number with a known value
in order to stop the transfer of a program to another machine.

All assistance gratefully received,

Ian

Well, I'm not sure that this is any help so.  Here goes.

The disk's serial number is stored in the BIOS Parameter Block (BPB) of
the drive.  The serial no is only valid for Version 4 BPB's onwards.
The BPB is found on the boot track of the drive.  The first three bytes
are the jump instruction to the bootstrap code, the next eight bytes are
the system name and then comes the BPB.  The disks serial no is stored
at offset 0x1c and is a double word.

However, the only way that I now how to read this is with a
undocumented DOS BIOS call.  The call is Interrupt 0x21, and it is
sub-function 0x53.  HOWEVER, i don't know how to ret at this data from
visual basic.
