Alias path

 Alias path

Hi,

I'm fairly new in Delphi world. So it my be a silly question...

I need to change Alias of a Database at run time. It has to change Dir
depending on set of records to use (1998/1999/2000). I know it uses the
TDatabase component, but so far I haven't been able to set it up.

How do I retrieve the actual path for the BDE Alias, and how do I use that
one + a Subdir for the local Alias?

TIA

Two critical pieces of information that are needed to answer your question:

1. What is the database type? For example: dBASE, Paradox, InterBase,
   Oracle.

2. How is the database accessed? Native BDE driver? ODBC? Database
   engine other than the BDE? Direct calls to the database system's API? Or
   ... ?

How you need to approach this situation depends on the answers to these
questions. Different variations on the above dictate different means by
which to accomplish what you ask.

The GetAliasParams method of Session variable allows to retrieve the
parameters associated with wished BDE alias. For example, if you want to
read the default user name and database folder parameters, you must use the
next code:

Session.GetAliasParams(strAliasName, cbAliasParams.Items);
edUserName.Text := cbAliasParams.Items.Values['USER NAME'];
edDirectory.Text := cbAliasParams.Items.Values['PATH'];

Alias is a set of parameters needed for connection to a database. TDatabase
component uses it for connection to your database. Your information system
must be realized with ONE database, and in ONE directory (or file, depends
on type of database).  If it's not like that, you must think again about
concepts for building databases. If your database already exists, its
better to modify database than working with bad one.
Database is a set of tables and relations between tables. So, sets of
records (independent of date) must be in one or more tables of your
database, and you don't have to change path in Alias. Install Shield for
Delphi will solve problem with installation of BDE and path of application
and database, if you want to transfer application on other computer without
BDE (don't forget ODBC driver if you use database other than dBASE or
Paradox).

P.S. Sorry for bad english.
