 JDBC type vs. DATABASE type

Hi,
i want to create tables via JDBC on my ORACLE database.
Should i use the JDBC types or the ORACLES types in my SQL statement?
(Ok, in most cases the are equal, but not everytime)

Example:
In JDBC i have the type VARCHAR. Also in ORACLE. As far as i know will
the JDBC type mapped to a certain database type. But i would like to use
VARCHAR2 from ORACLE.
But when i want to create the tables on different databases which have
no VARCHAR2, it will surely fail.

The same Problem i will get, using the JDBC types DATE and TIME.
Is there a recommended way?

thanks for you help
Stefan
