Its not on the CD. You must download it from Microsoft. Its a free download.

 How to install MSDE
I ordered the MSDE CD from Microsoft. The MSDE setup was unacceptably
bizzarre, or maybe I'm just missing something. When I ran the MSDE setup
file, it ran forever then finally displayed an error message: something
about using bad command-line arguments. I was like WHAT????

I read the Readme and it said that you had to use command line args when you
ran the setup file. I'd never heard of a setup program that *required*
command-line args to run at all. That's pretty unfriendly.

Then, after I got the command-line args right (--I guess they were right--),
the setup ran forever then quit suddenly. I couldn't tell if it succeeded or
not. There were no shortcuts created nor any messages.

MSDE isn't included with VStudio, take a look to
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/msde/

 How to install MSDE
You must have IE 4.01 or later installed (of course :-) ). The purpose of
the style of setup is to allow unattended setup. In other words you will
build the setup of MSDE into your own setup application when you distribute
your MSDE based solution.

 How to install MSDE
Yesterday I was at a friend's office and he
installed his from Office2000 CD and he
has no problem (at least we could see
the Service Manager running on the tray).
But we have a problem when he tried to
test it using Interdev and got a message
saying something like OLE DB error '80040e4d'
user logon failed.

That's why they call it an unattended installation...

ps.  The mdac_type.exe that is packaged by the PDW runs command line
args against the exe when it installs it.
