java.sql.Connection.setReadOnly()

 java.sql.Connection.setReadOnly()
I'm looking for an explanation of the method. The JDBC API says that it
"Puts this connection in read-only mode as a hint to enable database
optimizations". Does it mean that executing any of delete/update/etc. should
fail? Or the result of the operation that changes data is not defined?

Thanks in advance,
