How parameter "processes" in initXXXX.ora affect Oracle

Hi, group

Could anyone give me some idea on how Oracle instance is affected by
parameter "processes" in initXXXX.ora?
I am doing a fresh install of Oracle8.1.7 on Solaris2.7. I consistently get
an ORA-03113 error. I figured out that
the parameter "processes" in init.ora causes the problem. The default value
for "processes" is 50. I have to reduce
it to 30 to clear the problem.
My Solaris box is "Enterprise 420r". I believe that I have far more than
enough resource to support 50 Oracle
user processes on my box. Here is the exact copy of my "init.ora" file.

You need to RTFM & adjust the Solaris paramters in /etc/system.
set semsys:seminfo_semmsl = 2048
* to match number of Oracle processes

Simply put the value of processes inside of initSID.ora
can NOT exceed the value of SEMMSL; otherwise Oracle won't start.

HTH & YMMV!

Show us output of

egrep 'set s(hmsys|emsys)' /etc/system
