Installing Oracle 8i or 8.0.5 on RedHat Linux 6.0

Installing Oracle 8i or 8.0.5 on RedHat Linux 6.0
Hi,

Has anyone been successful in installing Oracle 8i or 8.0.5 on RedHat Linux
6.0.

I've tried a few times unsuccessfully.

Oracle 8i would either not launch the JRE or not install correctly (fully).

Oracle 8.0.5 installs fine, however when I try to launch svrmgrl or sqlplus
I get
a memory fault error.

Do I need to install a few patches on RedHat 6.0???

If anyone knows... please help.

Regards,
Gil

Yep! After alot of pain I might add.

I had to resort to doing a custom install of RedHat6. So I can not be sure
what fix my initial problems.

However, ensure you install all RedHat6 compatibility libraries & source
libraries.
JRE 1.1.6
TCL 7.5

I also noted that the images would not run until I applied the Oracle
8.1.5.0.2 patch.
Once this patch was applied everything appears to work. You must ensure that
this patch run is error free otherwise you wont get an oracle image.

Another must..... appears to be a correctly sized swap partition, my test
server only had 64Mb of RAM, when my swap file was only 70 + or - a few Mb
the server would re-boot every so often. In the end I create a 256Mb swap,
but as I said earlier this was created when I decide to do a custom install
so somewhere between selecting the compat lib, getting rid of superfluous
services, creating a bigger swap file and applying the Oracle patch the
install started to work.

Whoops! almost forgot, be sure to install all the font libraries. On the
RedHat6 out of the box server install the Oracle Java applets had a small
very fat ugly unreadable font displayed. It wasn't until I decided to
install every font available that this font became readable.

you are almost there. you need to install some linux packages and relink. it is all explained pretty well in the oracle readme. i, like a good user, ignored the docs until i got the same error.

(including how to get the JRE working).

Hope this helps,

Yes, I had a very sucessful 8i Linux Redhat 6.1 install by following the
directions found at this link (which incidentally is for RH 6.0):

http://homepages.tig.com.au/~jmsalvo/linux/oracle8i.html

I highly recommend it.
