ORA-07690 on OpenVMS 7.1

 ORA-07690 on OpenVMS 7.1

We changed the db_block_buffers in the init file to double what it was
(trust me - there's MORE than enough memory available to do this) and
the DB would not start back up - instead it gave an ORA-07690 error.

I can not find the messages and codes book, but oerr gave me the
following:
ORACLE7> oerr ora 07690

Defaulting to language code: US.

WARNING: the ORA_ROOT:[RDBMS.MESG] directory does not exist.
         Defaulting to ORA_ROOT:[RDBMS].

ERROR: the ORA_ROOT:[ORA_ROOT:[RDBMS]ORAUS.MSG] file does not exist.
       Defaulting to ORA_ERROR.

Searching DISK$C1LV0:[ORACLE.ORACLE7.RDBMS]ERROR.MSG; for message
number 7690.

07690, 00000, smscre: $CRMPSC_GDZRO_64 failure

// *Cause:  VMS system service : $CRMPSC_GDZRO_64 failed.
// *Action: Examine system error message and refer to VMS documentation

Also - we are running Oracle 7.3.3.6 on OpenVMS 7.1 with three
instances on this machine.  I am searching for the VMS documentation -
anyone have a clue in the meantime?  Oracle support hasn't been much
help thus far.  :(

 ORA-07690 on OpenVMS 7.1

Sonya,

Forgive the question but are you sure the error was 7690?  I have gone back
through all my documentation (VMS specific) and con not find such an error.
If this is indeed the error code, you may have to contact oracle support.

The only other possible thought is did you check the file permissions on the
new init file?  When modifying the file under VMS it usually default
security to that of the account making the change.

HTH

 ORA-07690 on OpenVMS 7.1
It is 7690 - we got a screen capture of it - thanks for looking through
your docs - I couldn't find what they did with their install guide, and
the errors and codes book said that anything in that range would be in
there...  Our VMS admin however did find a page on the compaq site that
talks about the service involved, and it is memory related - however,
he knows barely more about VMS than I do (scary isn't it).  I will
check the permissions on the file though, as I created a copy of it as
myself and edited it, and then gave it to the admin for him to replace
the other with after he got the mem installed.  Maybe he was logged in
as himself or system or something.  Thanks for the tip.

 ORA-07690 on OpenVMS 7.1
I'd be interested in seeing what the problem was.  We also run Oracle
under OpenVMS and I did the exact samething you did.  I verified that
we had enough memory, which we did, and then I bumped up the
db_block_buffers.  I don't recall the error message, but like you, our
database wouldn't start up.  Fortunately we had the old init.ora file
and could recover.

I'm not sure (I'm not a VAX Sys Admin) but you may need to first
modify some system parameters via sysgen, then do an autogen, and then
re-start your database with the new init.ora parameters.

I didn't do it because my company layed off our VAX Sys Admin.
Good luck
