 Oracle8 Installation Problem

Hello,

I am running Windows 2000 Pro and purchased the database book "Database
Management Systems" by Ramakrishnan and Gehrke and it came with a CD
containing "Oracle 8i Personal Edition Version 8.1.5". When I try to
install the software by running setup.exe I get the following error
message:

Invalid Staging Area. There are no top level components for Windows NT
available for install from this staging area.

When I get this message the CD goes funny. The CD has a stain in it and
so does the one I brought back for an exchange and I am afraid that this
might be a manufacturing problem. Does anyone know what a staging area
is? Is it some kind of sector on the CD?

I would be glad to hear from you if you have recommendations or if you
happen to have been experiencing the same problem.

Thanks,

Neil

 Oracle8 Installation Problem

The version of Personal Oracle8i that comes with the Elmasri/Navathe
textbook can only be installed on Windows98, I would assume the same is true
for your version.  I would also assume that is the case with NT as well.

 Oracle8 Installation Problem
You are right. The CD that came with the book by Ramakrishnan and Gehrke was
only good for Windows 98. I really should have checked this before posting.
Fortunately it was possible for me to download Oracle 8i Personal Edition
directly from the Oracle website. To be honest now that I have upgraded
the RAM to 512 MB and reinstalled Red Hat 7.1 with a suitable partitioning
scheme with a /tmp directory larger than 400 MB and a large enough /usr
partition I am ready to install Oracle 9i Database. There would be no
particular reason for me to migrate to Oracle 9i right now other than
to keep up to date if it were not for the fact that Oracle 8i is
glibc 2.1 based and Red Hat 7.1 comes with glibc 2.2 so I have
no choice but to install the bulkier Oracle 9i. The package
consisted of three CD images and I decided to download the
packages overnight for that very reason.

Bye!

Neil
