ORA-1034 (Oracle not Available) It's killing me
I installed o8, I am able to start it up, but I am not able to connect
remotedly to it. Oracle DOcs say some BS about SGA ,I tried playing
around with it but no luck. I restarted the server, the machine, no
luck. LIstener is running, tnsnames.ora on local machine is fine (as a
matter of fact I was able to connect to the previous installation). I
have no idea what the heck else to do.

Make sure Listener is listenning on the right port the same that client
talking to.
Check the tndnames on the client and run <LSNRCTL status> on the server.
Try first confirm the connection by Oracle tools like SQL*plus rather than
an ODBC connection

Its killing you cause its dead or so it seems. My suggestion is to do a
tnsping to the service name from whatever remote location you are trying
to connect to. If it is successful then you know for sure that it is not
the 'networking components' that are down and you can work on the rest.
Please provide with the OS and the version number for further details and
also exact command or procedure you are trying to implement and a copy of
your tnsnames.ora on the remote location.

I get 1034's when I do an upgrade and forget to change oracle_home in
the listener.  Both oratab and listener.ora need to have the correct
home.

First time it happened, it took me a long time to find.  Second took
less time.  Now I look for it right away.  Too bad I can't remember to
get it right when I do it:)
