Function-based indexes in Oracle 8i

 Function-based indexes in Oracle 8i

I'm unable to create Function-based indexes on Oracle 8i (Solaris)

It comes out with the followin error --
ORA-00439: feature not enabled: Function-based indexes

Ora Doc says use COMPATIBLE parameter to 8.1.0 but still it won't work.
I queried the V$OPTION view and it says FALSE for the Function-based
Index feature.

On another 8i database the index creation works fine. Is something
wrong with the database creation or is there any way I can enable this
feature.

TIA,
Ashish

function based indexes are not available with the Oracle8i 'standard edition'.
They are available with the Enterprise Edition.

You can check out the feature/factor matrix available in the document "getting
to know Oracle8i".  If you do not have the documentation, it is available online
at http://technet.oracle.com/

Tom -- I am using Enterprise Edition of 8i and as I said in earlier
message the index creation works fine on another box.

what does:

BANNER
----------------------------------------------------------------
Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.5.0.0 - Production
PL/SQL Release 8.1.5.0.0 - Production
CORE Version 8.1.3.0.0 - Production
TNS for Solaris: Version 8.1.5.0.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 3.4.0.0.0 - Production

show you.

what does "not work" mean -- are you getting the ORA-439 or something else?

Tom - you are correct the database which does not allow creation of
function-based indexes is not Enterprise Edition. However the other
database is Enterprise Edition & the index creation works fine.

Thanks very much.
