I tried to install Oracle 8.1.5 on a SuSE 6.2 and had similiar, big
problems.  Sometimes I was able to install parts of the system, but
the installation always was incomplete and far from usable, but this
behaviour was not deterministic.  It seems as if the OUI shipped from
Oracle is buggy.  SuSE provides a patch on their website which could
successful repair the stuff:

        http://www.suse.de/en/support/oracle/

Their patch (SuSE 6.2, Oracle 8.1.5i) contains several rpm packages:

        - tcl 7.5
        - jre 1.1.6v5
        - patch from oracle itself
        - startup scripts (the only SuSE specific part)

Sascha

PS: <quote from SuSE>
(FYI [For Your Information]: Oracle 8i on SuSE Linux 6.2 has
        been officially certified by Oracle)

Are you using gnome? If u are, make sure you have
enlightenment-0.15.5-37.i386.rpm or higher. Or try using kde.

I have created a help page on installing 8i on Redhat 6.0:

http://homepages.tig.com.au/~jmsalvo/linux/oracle8i.html

Granted that the focus was RedHat 6.0, most of them work as well with
6.1, except for things such as runlevels for automatic startup and
shutdown (RedHat 6.0 default runlevel is 3, while 6.1 uses 5 as the
default).
