 oas+jservlets and german umlauts

Hello to everyone!

I've the following problem: I implemented a web-page based on oas at
an customers office, that gets it's data from an oracle 8.1.6 server.
the tables are filled with an ms-access application, and everything's
working fine. But when I access the tables all umlauts (characters two
additional dots at their tops) are replaced by their equivalent
without those dots (eg. ?->a) and so called "sharp s" (written like
the greek bet-sign) are replaced by a question mark.

On the server, the access clients and on the oas the NLS_LANG setting
is set to "AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1". NLS_SORT is set to
"GERMAN". Im surprised, that the sorting algorithms are working
correct, (a,?,b,...) but the characters don't show up.

Thank you for helping,

but... how was the database created? what is the characterset
of the database itself? if that does not support the extended
characterset (what? anything else in the world than us of a???)
you'll never get it done.

can you query (with sql) and does it look ok then?

Thanks Frank,

for your answer. I can query data via sql and it looks fine. I can
also query data via Access and it also looks fine. But: It doesn't
work with java...
